Burning Mouth Syndrome : Understanding and Prosthetic Management
Park Ju-Hee

Lim Young-Jun
Abstract
Burning mouth syndrome is characterized by a burning sensation in the tongue or other oral sites, usually in the absence of clinical and laboratory findings. Despite extensive study of the underlying cause of BMS, the etiology and pathogenesis remain obscure. The disorder has been associated with a variety of other conditions - including menopause, psychological problems, nutritional deficiencies, and disorders of the mouth. The syndrome has no visible physical signs, but it can be accompanied by dry mouth, metallic or bitter tastes and increased or reduced sensitivity to flavors. More recently, some researchers have suggested dysfunctional or damaged nerves as a possible cause. This report discusses our current understanding of BMS and provide considerations for patient management after the prosthetic treatment. Start with the simple and eliminate various possibilities. Even if a cause cannot be found, a dentist working with your physician may recommend medications to provide relief of symptoms.
